Exhibition Słońsk – Station 13:
The panel shows the stations of the new circular route “Traces of the Knights of St John” in the German-Polish region around the Oder and Warta rivers. As the last panel of the permanent exhibition, it also provides information on the EU funding project that financed the renovation, the circular route and much more.
Much of the Oder-Warta region was owned by the Order of St. John for many centuries, and the St. John’s cross can still be found today in many town coats of arms, on churches or in castles and palaces.
Follow in the footsteps of the Knights of St. John and discover tranquil towns and villages, legendary castles and historic churches. Make a pilgrimage to Templar and St. John churches and learn more about the exciting history of the Order of Knights.
The circular route is divided into four sub-regions, each with several St John’s sites.
For example, start right away with a visit to the Church of Our Lady of Czestochowa in Słońsk. Built by the Knights of St John until 1508, the knightly knighthood of the order took place here from 1550. The imposing church tower was built in 1818 according to plans by Karl Friedrich Schinkel. The interior of the church is also impressive with its original building details and a particularly elaborately designed star vault.
EU funded project 2019-2023
The rescue of the castle ruins was part of the project “Touristic valorisation of the history of the Order of Saint John in the Polish-German border region”, funded with € 1,231,533.38 by the European Regional Development Fund from the INTERREG VA BB-PL 2014-2020 cooperation programme. The circular route, 3D elements, the permanent exhibition, an image film and much more were also developed as part of this project. In addition to the municipality of Słońsk, the project partners were the city of Seelow and the Brandenburg Provincial Cooperative of the Order of St. John.
