Built by the Knights of St. John until 1508, the knightly knighthood of the order took place here from 1550. The imposing church tower was built in 1818 according to plans by Karl Friedrich Schinkel.
The particularly elaborate late Gothic vine painting in the church vault is impressive, with 200 gilded keystones and the coats of arms of all 24 lord masters in office since 1305 as well as the former town of Sonnenburg.
of the former town of Sonnenburg. Numerous wooden and cast-iron coat-of-arms panels (see illustration on the right) as well as former furnishings and ornamental objects can be found in the church and vividly convey the centuries-long history of the Order of St John in the region.
After 1945, the church was renamed Catholic and dedicated to the Virgin Mary of Czestochowa.
